Domingo de Ramos

Day 108- 4/17

Basically everyone had already left for spring break vacations so I’d been hanging out at the beach and trying to get my 10 page paper started..about five in now!

Valladolid has one of the biggest Semana Santa celebrations, all of this week leading up to the Sunday of Easter. There are a lot of processions through the streets where the people carry “pasos.” These are kind of like floats of Jesús, Virgen Mary and other religious symbols. I am going to be gone for the main processions later this week. The celebration here is supposed to be very serious and more of a mourning period. The streets are silent and the figures are very realistic. Their hair is  often real, they use animal teeth and actual blood from animals.

These are some pictures of a procession I went to while I was still in town for Palm Sunday. It is a lot of the grade schools in town, with the students all dressed up and then there is a donkey paso at the end.

Kind of repetitive, but their costumes were cool.
